My take on Peaches n’ Cream for Breakfast – Grilled with Granola and Fresh Mint Leaves

Often in life we find ourselves in situations which we did not foresee nor prefer. We fight against it. We object to it. At some point, we may even loathe it. Nevertheless, I’m a firm believer that every cloud has a silver lining, and in the last 28 days, I’ve found several.

Recently choosing to become Vegan for personal and health reasons, I felt at a loss of where to begin with making my newly reformed meals. I savor cuisine far too much to sacrifice taste for health. So I began to go on an epic journey of creating (or recreating) things that I love through exploration, experimenting and discovery. It has been among the greatest quests of my life.

Documenting my journey on my social media through FaceBook (@Carla Turner Brown) and Instagram (@carlamichellebrown), I find myself sharing photos several times daily. I lie in bed dreaming of what to make next, immerse myself in photographs and food documentaries, dialogue with fellow vegans and non-vegans (whom I hope to intrigue with my novice dishes) and can’t wait to find the newest vegan recipes that I can put a spin on.

It was during this recent epiphany that I began to treasure my coerced quarantining. I was reminded of something that I’ve known unconsciously since my childhood – I love…good food. Not merely because of its tastes. Not just because it’s a necessity of life. I love food because it is a complex and comprehensive medium through which souls, bodies and spirits are interconnected.

Cuisine sings of culture and resonates with richness, irrespective of where persons live or their socioeconomic status. It is interwoven with terrain and science, history and politics, math and mayhem, literature, loyalty, family, focus, poverty, pain, mystery and magic – and so much more!

For mefood is love that transfers from heart to plate to palate to heart.

I’ve garnered more feedback and phenomenal experiences in my fledgling attempts at transforming my meals than I could have ever imagined, as I considered my efforts to be small in nature. I dream in cuisine, thinking about dishes that summon memories of matriarchs, heritage, legends and legacies. It pleasurably consumes me – and connects me to people in a way that social distancing could never contend.

Had I not been in isolation, I would never have had the foggiest idea to consider my new adventure. I’m thankful for such contemplation now. I’ve long been a “foodie,” but this thoughtful and immensive time to reflect has placed me on a path that fills my soul much more than an empty cavern in my stomach.

As one of my high school teachers, Shirley Rose, told us every day when asked how she was doing, I’m now feeling, “Just peachy,” about my latest passion. Cuisine that makes me dream – in new colors. Bon appetit.

  1. Wow, Carla Michelle! These pictures are amazing. The food looks delicious. I think my favorite is the Mother’s Day brunch. I’m not sure what it is, but it looks like a celebration on your plate. Congratulations! I can appreciate some of your thoughts and experiences. I credit this quarantine period for me discovering that I love to cook. I always described myself as a baker not a great cook. Now, I keep a list of ingredients on hand and what I’m going to cook next. We are eating vegetarian, with a lot of vegan dishes too. I just made a vegan dal makhani tonight. I’m not a foodie yet, like you, but I am discovering a love and fulfillment in cooking that I never felt before. I just followed you on Instagram too. Looking forward to seeing more great food.

    1. Denise! I am so honored by your comments – I am easily a novice photographer! I do everything on my phone (because that’s my only camera, lol).

      I edited my Mother’s Day Brunch so as to have a clearer description, my apologies! I used an egg substitute called Just Egg. I topped it with sautéed spinach and mushrooms with grilled asparagus and a vegan hollandaise sauce.

      I also roasted some small, multi-colored breakfast potatoes and tossed them in olive oil, fresh parsley, pink Himalayan salt and cracked black pepper.

      As I always have to have something sweet (almost always), I also made French Toast with strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream dusted with cinnamon and dark maple syrup.

      I am equally excited by your journey and find myself doing the same thing! Certain ingredients I feel more comfortable working with I am keeping on hand – and I am always thinking about what’s next!

      Lose yourself is right! I can’t remember anything else in which I’ve so much enjoyed being consumed – except writing! And food and writing have such a wonderful marriage – it is a perfect combination for me.

      It has added a most pleasurable sheltering-in-place experience. And with four boys at home all day everyday (ages 4-15), I really need that!

    I’ve always loved your ability to use your words to evoke emotion, but you have outdone yourself today. I can feel your excitement leaping off the page, and it’s infectious. It’s awesome to know that you’re using this pandemic to reinvent your diet and taking others along for the ride. I think your pictures add a different dimension to your writing by visually stimulating our tastebuds just in case we were thinking that vegan meals may not be as good as you say. The pictures add substance to your narrative, making this non-vegan contemplate making changes herself. 🤔😊

      My greatest teacher of writing…I am convinced that my excitement and enthusiasm for food flows from an endless source of inspiration.

      I’m amazed at how the pandemic has ushered in such a place of intrigue and excitement for me. I feel like I am rediscovering cuisine in a whole new way – and I always thought I was fairly close to the zenith of my pleasure.

      I was wrong!

      My fascination and admiration for all things food has intensified as I approach what I eat from my new Vegan vantage point. I’m so elated to add a new dimension to my writing with photos of food that I can create, share and enjoy.

  4. Thanks for sharing your efforts, Carla. The wife and I continue under government mandated lockdown (for protecting the “elderly”) here in the Philippines. Fortunately we are surrounded by family, but we do miss being unable to attend church. We look forward to a return visit to the US, but must wait on clearance both from the airlines and the governments involved. No point in arriving in Houston just to re-enter quarantine. At this time, even that is not an option.

    Efforts here appear to be effective as viral infections are minimal. While economic impact is quite severe, I am more concerned about educational and social impacts. You, together with other friends and family remain in our prayers.
